One of the easiest ways to misunderstand teaching is to imagine that it is primarily a matter of delivering information clearly. Clarity matters, but it is not the whole job. A classroom is a system: students respond not only to content, but also to timing, incentives, cognitive load, social dynamics, pacing, and the structure of feedback.

This becomes especially obvious in introductory biology. A lesson that appears conceptually simple on paper can fail in practice because students lack prerequisite vocabulary, because the examples are too abstract, because the order of ideas is wrong, or because the assessment rewards recall when the goal is mechanistic reasoning. In each case, the issue is not merely explanation. It is system design.

Teaching has therefore pushed me to think more carefully about inputs and outputs, bottlenecks, lagging indicators, and feedback loops. A quiz score is not just a score. It is delayed information about where the system succeeded or broke down. Participation is not simply enthusiasm. It may reflect trust, confusion, incentives, or the difficulty of the task relative to a student’s current level of fluency.

Good instruction, then, is less like performance and more like iterative design. One establishes a direction, tests a structure, observes the response, and adjusts. That mindset has made teaching one of the most practically rigorous environments in which I have worked.

It has also shaped how I think beyond the classroom. Systems fail quietly before they fail visibly. Structure matters more than intention. And if outcomes are inconsistent, the right question is often not “Who is underperforming?” but “What in the design is producing this result?”
